The hour (x24x3) of Typo Berlin is upon us from 15.5.-17.5. and once again we all ask ourselves: “Yes, I’m psyched for the main event, but first, where the party at?”
Hey friends, we know where the party at.
(Not least, because we are also part of Typo this year. yeeeeh!)
Somewhere in the depths of Berlin there is a little modulating typographic concept store named Letters Are My Friends. It is a haven for us who are Friends of Letters, with the added bonus of dropping some great gigs from time to time in their adorable showroom where events have become legend (note: the Infamous BBQs of 2011, 2012, 2013 + vvvvlagshipstore 2011).
On Wednesday the 14th May, the festivities begin.
This party is so awesome our DJ is a calligrapher. Really.
There will also be a AV-serviced live performance by the wonderful Shiro Schwarz from Mexico City (who with Shifty Capzlock were transformed into fortune tellers for our Voodle Club#1), who look like rock star models and dress in black & white all the time, combining grey values to make a shade of Party.
And we dooooooo! Uuuhhh! OoooH!
Admire the beautiful studio frontispiece by Skor 72, and don’t forget to drop an eye or two on never seen before upcoming print delicacies.
The forecast is unpredictable – but be sure our book »Keep Tha Kerning Tight« is heading your way in any state of alter ego.
At least, there will be a dummy show!
Also, Geela Eden’s typographic magazine first issue »a/26« aka her masterpiece will be proudly previewed.
As Geela is just in training, addressing the final master presentation in front of the official audience a day earlier, we are super happy, that at 7.30pm she will give a 1/2h introduction about »a/26« with details about the making of to us!
As expected, there will be booze (hooray!) at the bar (brilliant!).
So come to the only place in town that has Type, Tech, and Is & Os as it’s modus operandi. Seat-takers and rock-outers, water-sippers and vodka-chuggers, all are welcome and all are guaranteed a great time.
Let’s warm up this Typo Berlin.

About Geela Eden’s »a/26«:
»a/26« heißt die erste Ausgabe des neuen Typografie-Magazins, das sich mit den Buchstaben des Alphabets befasst. Das erste Heft setzt sich auf vielfältige Weise mit dem Buchstaben A auseinander. So schreiben unter anderem der Schriftgestalter Albert-Jan Pool über »Das groteske einäugige a« und der Foundry-Gründer Jakob Runge in »Ein a bleibt ein a bleibt ein a« über das Gestalten einer modernen Textschrift. Durch das A als gemeinsame Schnittstelle können auch typo-untypische Themen einbezogen und aus typografischer Perspektive beleuchtet werden. So wird unter anderem die sinnliche Wahrnehmung des Buchstaben von Synästhetikern sowie das A im différance-Begriff Derridas thematisiert. Die typografischen Hauptrollen des Magazins werden in jeder Ausgabe von Schriften übernommen, deren Namen mit dem jeweiligen Buchstaben beginnen. Konzipiert und gestaltet wurde die »a/26« von der Typografin Geela Eden im Rahmen ihrer Master-Arbeit.
About Shiro Schwarz:
Shiro Schwarz is an audiovisual production and performance duo. The project was founded on 2011 by Pammela Rojas & Rafael Marfil. Pammela is a visual artist and singer and Rafael is a synthesist and music composer.
When you attend to a Shiro Schwarz show, listen to their music or watch one of their videos, you will depart on an extrasensory voyage through space into a mysterious funky universe.
Be careful, as there is light, but also darkness in the Shiro Schwarz Universe.

Bei Skor Rokswell geht es am Ende des Tages um gute Musik, nichts anderes, Genregrenzen ignorierend und frei von Dogmatismus. Im Brutkasten des Rap groß geworden, hatten spätestens nach den ersten Berührungspunkten mit Interpreten aus Detroit wie J Dilla oder Waajeed die Scheuklappen ausgedient und der Horizont erweiterte sich stetig. Im Hip Hop verwurzelt, geerdet von allem, aus dem er entstand und beflügelt von Richtungen, die darüber hinaus von ihm infiziert wurden. 2008 rief er zusammen mit zwei Freunden das Kollektiv Champion Sound ins Leben, dass in Erfurt beheimatet, regelmäßig alte Legenden und neue Sterne am Rap- und Beathimmel auf die Bühne holt. Als Selbsterfüllung begann er wöchentlich in seinen Sunday Sessions die neuen und alten Schätze aus seiner Sammlung zusammen zu mixen und ins Netz zu stellen. Nun schon knapp 200 Ausgaben später beglückt er aller sieben Tage globusumspannend seine Hörerschaft.

‘Keep Tha Kerning Tight’ is a book (why book!? – Don’t ask!) by and about Letters Are My Friends and its extensions.
Since its opening 2011 till now, we are not only Berlin’s first and only typographic concept store where type meets tech, rather than a interdisciplinary design & prototyping studio, production label, research lab, event venue, showroom and running ecosystem itself. — Bootrapped from nowhere, we’ve come a long way, enough reason to collate and track in a book.
In the book weshare our approach on Type ‘n’ Tech and present a complete overview of what happened in the last years at this place.
– And hopefully in the future.
The book will be available approximately summer 2014! – We gonna show you the dummies 🙂
