SMPL THNGS – 13.9.2014

Category: Events

Exhibit and live performance celebrating unfiltered immediacy hosted and presented by Letters Are My Friends.

Illustrations by Maki Shimizu, installation design by Miren Oller, performance by Graciela Maria, Lukasz Polowczyk (RQM) and Pablo Castagnola.

Smpl Thngs is an experiment exploring the experience of the immediacy most commonly associated with the digital world, here transposed, to an analog / real life setting.
It’s a study of human connection, the imperfect beauty of spontaneous expression and our innate, but often hidden, ability to communicate our emotions without any premeditation. Finally, Smpl Thngs is a celebration of the fleeting moment conveyed through unfiltered ad-lib / off-hand creativity.

The spontaneous recording and illustration sessions that led to the creation of this project took place at the Tolcha Recording Studios located in Weissensee-Berlin; occasionally re-routed to the Georgian Parochial cemetery. The recordings feature the sound of a veteran Rhodes piano, field recordings of Berlin and the interwoven voices of singer-songwriter Graciela María and spoken word artist Lukasz Polowczyk aka RQM.

All illustrations, as well as a full documentation of this project were made and put together by illustrator / comic book artist Maki Shimizu. String / cello arrangements were added to the recordings after the sessions, by multi-instrumentalist / composer Simon Houghton aka Sneaky.

The exhibit will feature a collection of songs recorded during this ‘experiment’, the illustrations that accompanied the recordings – reassembled into installations by set designer / art director Miren Oller. There is gonna a live-set aswell!

As usual Letters Are My Friends gonna drop in some arty extras too. It might be a new window front piece, it might be some concept drinks or interactive gadget-alerts.
